Your Home Away From Home

Tucked away in a quiet old fishing town on the caribbean coastline lives a thriving community of people from around the world enjoying the magic of the Costa Rican lifestyle. Whether you are looking to catch the incredible waves of Salsa Brava or to relax and unwind on the calm beaches with a fresh coconut in your hand, Puerto Viejo has something to offer everyone.

If you are looking for the opportunity to enjoy the waves of Cocles Beach, snorkeling the reefs, of Punta Uva and Manzanillo, or hiking the jungle trails full of sloths, monkeys, and other wildlife this unique blend of lush jungle and Caribbean sea is a place like no other.

Located just on the edge of the town, La Ruka is a short stroll away onto a beautiful and vibrant jungle side property. It is just far enough way to hear the true sounds of the jungle at night, but close enough for a walk or bike ride to grab a bite to eat and listen to some live music. Walking into the reception you will be welcomed with a warm smile and positive vibes.  If you arrive in the morning the  person behind the desk will most likely be one of the owners, Dannie or Dave. And if not they, another fellow backpacker will guide you through the property to get your bearings and meet up with other travelers playing pool, sharing a community meal or enjoying good conversation over a little Caribbean green.

This is not just our motto, it’s our lifestyle. Being travelers we understand what it can feel like to be constantly on the go and/or “homesick.” Our goal was to create a home, not just a hostel.  We would like our guests to feel as if they are at home and feel free to relax, unwind, and just be themselves. With the help of our friends and family from around the world we have been graciously able to make this happen.

Whether you are coming from San Jose or Bocas Del Toro, getting to Puerto Viejo is fairly simple.  Although there is not an airport here, the shuttles and public buses are extremely affordable and accessible. Click here to learn more.

Come see what this magical place is all about. The unique culture, beautiful bio-diversity that the jungle brings and the smell of the Caribbean waves rolling onto the beaches make for an experience you will not get anywhere else in the world. Even if you are just passing through for a few nights, stop by and say hello. You will be glad you did. See you soon!!!!!!! 🙂
